18 Month Trip Turns Into 23-Year Relationship

When former Lufthansa and Hapag-Lloyd executive Gunther Holfort and his wife Christine picked up their their brand new Mercedes-Benz 300GD G-Wagen in 1988 for an 18-month trip, they had no idea that the journey would end up spanning the next 23 years of their lives. The famous 300GD has now over half a million miles on it (equivalent to circling the earth 20 times), has made over 200 border crossings into countries, and when the journey to a new destination can't be made by land, the vehicle is shipped. In all the years and all the miles that have been put on the vehicle, no major breakdowns have occurred; though Holfort does change out parts as they wear out. Every 100,000 miles, Holfort takes the vehicle back to Germany for required maintenance. Since the odometer can't accurately record the extreme number number of miles that have been put on the vehicle, it is periodically changed out and a new sticker is placed to reflect the accurate number of miles. All of these travels have taken place without any sponsorship from Mercedes or any other company; all on Holfort's dime. Holfort's love affair with this particular vehicle is soon to end as the vehicle will be put on display in the Mercedes Museum in Stuttgart, Germany. To read up and see more photos of Holfort's expeditions with his 1988 Mercedes-Benz 300GD G-Wagen, head over to this article from MBWorld.org

Karl Benz: The Father of the Automobile

Karl Benz
Though Henry Ford's name is synonymous with the modern automobile, Ford's real claim to fame comes from his ability to produce an affordable automobile for the general market. The real father and inventor of the automobile was a German engineer by the name of Karl Benz. Though working closely with other engineers of the time period, Benz first acquired a patent for his invention of the internal combustion engine in 1879. From there, Benz developed the very first gasoline-powered automobile which he acquired the patent for in 1886. At the time, developing a method of steering a self-propelled vehicle with four wheels was difficult, so most of Benz's automobiles had three wheels. Because many roads at that time were simply two ruts for wheels on either side of the carriage, this made the ride of the original three-wheeled vehicles quite uncomfortable, if not treacherous for passengers. In order perfect his invention for the wider market, Benz later went into a business with Austrian businessman and car racer Emil Jellinek; who had the nickname "Monsieur Merecedes" in racing circles. The legacies of Benz and Jellinek continue in every Mercedes-Benz to hit the highways and city streets. For more information on the earliest automobiles from Karl Benz, visit this post from 3 Wheelers.com.

Over a 125 years since the patent of Karl Benz’s first automobile, his name lives on in every Mercedes-Benz automobile as being the standard in automotive excellence. An excellent car requires excellent maintenance and repair.
